Employee Volunteerism
EMC employees are actively involved in our corporate philanthropy. Through charitable walks and runs, building houses, donating holiday gifts for abused and neglected children, and mentoring students in area schools, EMC employees address the challenges facing their local communities.
Some of the hands-on ways EMC employees get involved in our local communities include:
Employee drives
The Department of Social Services (DSS) Kids’ Fund supports thousands of abused and neglected children. Each December, EMC employees in Massachusetts participate in the Fund’s Snowman Project, donating toys, clothes, and other gifts to children in need. Employees are now partnering with local charities around the United States for holiday drives, and in 2007, EMC employees gave gifts to at least 10,000 children.
In North Carolina, EMC employees from the Apex and Research Triangle Park facilities helped raise $1,500 and collected 220 coats for the annual Coats for the Children telethon. WRAL, a local television station, collected pledges on live television and encouraged area residents to drop off new and gently-used winter coats and gently used winter coats and clothes at designated locations.
EMC employees in California facilities collected gifts for more than 150 children and delivered them to The Family Giving Tree, a nonprofit organization based in the San Francisco Bay Area.
EMC employees from across the nation contributed to the multiple "Soldier Drives" held in 2007. The overwhelming generosity of the employees ensured those currently stationed overseas.
Annually, EMC employees in Massachusetts, North Carolina, California, New Hampshire, and Missouri participated in a Back-to-School drive. This drive collects backpacks, notebooks, pens and pencils, and other school supplies for children in need.
In 2005, EMC employees gave generously to relief funds for the December 2004 Tsunami, Hurricane Katrina, and the South Asia earthquake. EMC matched employee contributions to the American Red Cross and to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies dollar-for-dollar. Together, EMC and more than 7,000 employees donated more than $1.4 million for Tsunami relief, over $1.2 million in aid for Hurricane Katrina, and nearly $136,000 in aid to South Asia Earthquake relief.
Team EMC charitable walks and runs
EMC had corporate teams in the following charitable walks and runs in 2005, with hundreds of employees participating:
- Boston Marathon—Michael Lisnow Respite Center
- Relay for Life
- HMEA Independence 5K
- March of Dimes Walk America
- Walk for Hunger
- Pan Mass Challenge
- American Heart Walk
- Making Strides Against Breast Cancer
- Light the Night for Leukemia and Lymphoma
Habitat for Humanity
EMC offers all of its employees sponsored "Build Days" with Habitat for Humanity. Employees pound nails, paint walls, and complete other simple construction tasks on a new house for a family in need. This year, 2007, marks the eighth year that EMC employees have participated in Habitat for Humanity outings.
Education initiatives
EMC employee volunteers are the backbone of EMC's partnerships with North High School in Worcester, MA and the Academy of Information Technology in Raleigh, NC. Also, each year EMC engineers contribute time as mentors in the FIRST Robotics competition, a national competition for which EMC sponsors local school teams in Massachusetts, California, and North Carolina. In May and June of 2007, numerous EMC engineers volunteered to present engineering activities to the seventh grade classrooms of five Massachusetts schools.
