Climate Change Programs
To address climate change risks to the environment, EMC actively participates in the following climate protection initiatives.
Climate leaders
In 2004 EMC was one of only 50 companies in the U.S. to voluntarily join the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Climate Leaders program, an industry-government partnership that works to develop long-term climate-change strategies. The program challenges participants to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and to track these emissions as a way to measure progress.
Greenhouse gas management
EMC has pledged to reduce GHG emissions intensity from our US facilities by eight percent below 2005 levels by 2012.
To this end, we have developed a detailed Inventory Management Plan (IMP) and established a comprehensive GHG baseline inventory. EMC does not have significant direct GHG emissions; indirect emissions from electricity consumption are our primary source of GHG.
Since announcing our goal, EMC has implemented many energy-saving measures that reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Carbon disclosure
Recognizing that climate-change risk is a global concern, EMC participates in the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), a non-profit organization that administers the world's largest institutional investor collaboration on the business implications of climate change.
In response to investor interest, and in keeping with EMC's existing policies, EMC has provided a complete accounting of our global GHG emissions and climate-related environmental programs and activities to the CDP. EMC's 2007 submission was awarded "Best in Class" by the CDP.
Climate Savers
EMC purchases energy-efficient computers, photocopiers, printers, and servers, and has joined the Climate Savers Computing Initiative as an affiliate member. By encouraging energy efficiency in corporate purchasing as well as equipment usage, we are reducing GHG emissions from unnecessary energy expenditure.
